Thanks to everyone who came to Hack Day!

We'd like to thank every one of you who came to Hack Day for making it such a ridiculously cool experience. We all had an extraordinary time and the stuff you guys came up with was ridiculously good. We've seen over three thousand pictures appear on Flickr, dozens of blog posts, experienced lightning strikes, indoor rain, wifi angst, evacuations, an almost beautiful collective Doctor Who-watching experiences, quite a lot of Matt Cashmore's dodgy 90s rave music, talks from many of the best people in the industry, exclusive API launches, faceball, sofa-sleeping, film crews, enormous venue movements, reasonable pizza, quick changes of plans, a storming set by The Rumble Strips and over seventy creative and unusual projects created by the day's most important people - the hackers. I personally couldn't be happier with the way the event turned out, and once I've slept for a month I'll look forward to re-experiencing the whole thing through your blog posts, twitterings and flickr posts. Thanks again everyone! An astonishing weekend. Posted by: Tom Coates on 18 Jun 07 at 09:01

Last.fm group

One idea that's been thrown around that we might try in a bit is to make the music match the mood of the hackers more accurately by getting everyone to sign up to a last.fm group and then making it play our aggregate taste. It's a pretty interesting idea. We have no idea if it'll work. Join this group on last.fm and we'll try it out later in the evening. Posted by: Tom Coates on 16 Jun 07 at 22:05

Join the IRC channel...

Join the Hack Day IRC channel It's at irc.freenode.net and the room is #hackdaylondon (as you'd probably expect)... Posted by: Tom Coates on 16 Jun 07 at 20:06

Lights and smoke...

For the few of you that have asked, we'll be bringing the house lights up a bit more when the talks are over. And we've turned off the atmospheric mists for a bit! Posted by: Tom Coates on 16 Jun 07 at 11:23

Sorry about the wifi!

As you all noticed, the wifi went down a chunk this morning. We're really sorry about that, and we got it up and running as quickly as we can. If it happens again, let someone in a red shirt know ASAP. Posted by: Tom Coates on 16 Jun 07 at 11:22

Set-up day!

We're all heading up to Alexandra Palace this morning to start setting up the venue. Look out for pictures on Flickr and the Backnetwork this afternoon! Posted by: Tom Coates on 15 Jun 07 at 07:26

The Rumble Strips

Just to help get you in the mood, we've posted up some videos of The Rumble Strips performing three of their songs - Oh Creole, Motorcycle and Hate Me (You Do)... Posted by: Tom Coates on 13 Jun 07 at 10:55

Food and Drink!

Just a quick bit of warning. We'll be supplying food and drink for the event, and some of it will be vegetarian, but we're not going to be able to accommodate needs much more diverse than that. So if you have special requirements you should bring your own packed lunch. And if you need Mars Bars in order to function and code effectively, then it might be worth your while bringing a few for emergencies! Posted by: Tom Coates on 12 Jun 07 at 17:05

Do you need to use Yahoo/BBC APIs?

Some people have been asking whether or not you need to use Yahoo or BBC APIs in your hack to be eligible for a prize. The short answer to this is that you should definitely try and get something from the two companies into your hack and you probably won't win a prize if there's nothing from the two organisations in it. But it's worth adding a couple of other things. Firstly, there are a lot of APIs! There's BBC Programme Information, Weather Information, everything that Yahoo provides, Flickr, YUI, del.icio.us, webjay, upcoming, maps... Between the two companies there aren't really a lot of areas that aren't covered, so it shouldn't be too limiting. The other thing is that we positively encourage people to also use other people's APIs at the event. So we'll be delighted to see stuff that also uses APIs from last.fm, facebook, amazon, ebay, dopplr, open street map, tioti, netvibes, google and/or thousands of other company's services. As ever if you have any questions, e-mail tecoates {at} yahoo-inc {dot} com and I'll try and answer them as best I can. Posted by: Tom Coates on 11 Jun 07 at 07:55

Join the Flickr Group!

Just in case you haven't noticed yet, there's a Flickr Hack Day Group. You should join immediately! Also the official tags for the day are hackdaylondon! Use them on del.icio.us and Flickr (and elsewhere) to be sure to have your stuff visible on the backnetwork and elsewhere... Posted by: Tom Coates on 08 Jun 07 at 14:34

Some e-mails are getting caught in spam filters...

Just a quick warning for some people. Some Hack Day e-mail updates to hackers have been caught by spam filters. You should have received two e-mails today, one update about the Hack Day with details of the Backnetwork and band, and another with your login code for this site. If you haven't received both, check you spam filters and make sure you mark anything from the Hack Team as not spam!
